Introduction to Our Jakarta Adventure

Welcome to our Jakarta adventure! After five days of quarantine, we’re finally ready to explore this bustling city. From its rich history to its vibrant street food scene, Jakarta offers an incredible array of experiences for families. We’re excited to dive into the culture and discover what this city has to offer. Let’s get started!

Visiting the Jakarta National Museum

Our first stop was the Jakarta National Museum, a place brimming with history. Unfortunately, we found out it was closed due to social distancing measures. Though we couldn’t explore the museum itself, the surrounding courtyard still provided a delightful experience. Colorful bikes and local vendors filled the area, creating a lively atmosphere.

Strolling along the river, we noticed some locals fishing with pellet guns, which was quite a sight. The canal streets are full of hidden gems, and even without entering the museum, we felt the essence of Jakarta’s history seep through the vibrant surroundings.

Discovering the Historic Suspension Bridge

As we wandered, we stumbled upon a historic suspension bridge nearby. While we didn’t have much information about it, it looked intriguing and was an unexpected highlight of our day. Crossing the bridge was an adventure in itself, providing a unique view of the city.

Getting Local Phone SIM Information

After our bridge adventure, it was time to sort out some essentials. We stopped to purchase local SIM cards for our phones. The affordability of data in Indonesia is impressive—60 gigs for just 178,000 rupiah! This is significantly cheaper than what we pay back home.

While waiting for the setup, we took a moment to refresh ourselves with snacks and drinks from a nearby convenience store. Staying hydrated and energized is crucial in Jakarta’s hot and humid climate, especially when exploring with kids.

Enjoying a Scenic River Walk

With our phones activated and refreshments in hand, we made our way back to Chinatown. The 15-minute walk was filled with sights and sounds of the city. Each step revealed more of Jakarta’s charm, from street vendors to the bustling atmosphere.

Chinatown, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, was our next destination. We were eager to dive into the local food scene, sampling everything from traditional dishes to unique street snacks. The vibrant market atmosphere was infectious, encouraging us to explore every corner.

Refreshing with Kopi Es Tak Kie Coffee

Our first culinary stop was at a historic coffee shop called Kopi Es Tak Kie, renowned for its iced coffee. The shop has been a staple for nearly a century, making it a must-visit. As we savored our drinks, we were treated to some delightful Chinese tea from friendly locals at the next table.

Chinatown is a treasure trove of flavors. Each alleyway offers something different, from handmade noodles to exotic sweets. We embraced the opportunity to try as many dishes as possible, immersing ourselves in the local culture.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we continued our adventure through the bustling streets, excited for what lay ahead. Every moment in Jakarta is a chance to connect with the city and its people, making our family outing truly unforgettable.

Tasting Bakmi Loncat Noodles

After our refreshing coffee, we made our way to a local favorite—Bakmi Loncat. This place is renowned for its handmade noodles, a true testament to Jakarta’s vibrant culinary scene. The aroma of the noodles being tossed in the kitchen was irresistible, setting the stage for what was to come.

Exploring the Jakarta National Monument

Feeling satisfied after our dumpling feast, we headed over to the Jakarta National Monument. This iconic structure is a symbol of the city’s independence and a must-see for anyone visiting Jakarta. We were eager to learn more about its significance and take in the views from the top.

Unfortunately, as we approached, we learned that the monument was closed due to health protocols. Though disappointed, we decided to explore the surrounding area instead, which was bustling with vendors and families enjoying the park.

We took a leisurely stroll around, appreciating the beautifully landscaped gardens and unique sculptures. The atmosphere was lively, filled with laughter and the sound of children playing. It was a reminder of how vibrant Jakarta can be, even when some attractions are temporarily closed.

Admiring the Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque

Just a stone’s throw away from the monument, we were excited to visit two architectural marvels: the Jakarta Cathedral and the Istiqlal Mosque. Their proximity symbolizes the harmonious coexistence of different cultures and religions in the city.

The Jakarta Cathedral, with its stunning gothic architecture, was a sight to behold. We marveled at the intricate details and the peaceful ambiance inside. The kids enjoyed exploring the vast space, learning about its history and significance.

Crossing the street, we visited the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. Its grand design and impressive dome left us in awe. The open spaces and welcoming environment made it a perfect spot for reflection. It was heartwarming to see families visiting both places, reinforcing the message of unity.

The line moved quickly, and we were soon at the counter, ready to indulge. The menu was filled with unique flavors, and we opted for the classic banana split and their famous spaghetti ice cream, a delightful concoction that looked just like a plate of spaghetti but was entirely sweet.

As we sat outside enjoying our treats, we reflected on our day. The warm weather, friendly locals, and delicious food made for an unforgettable experience. The kids were all smiles, and we knew we had created lasting memories in Jakarta.
