Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam
The Borneo Crossing: Direct flight, sea journey, or the complex multi-checkpoint land route.
✈️ Route 1: Direct Flight (Fastest & Easiest)
This is the most straightforward option, especially if traveling from Peninsular Malaysia (KLIA).
- **Airlines:** Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) and AirAsia.
- **Typical Routes:** Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) or Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Bandar Seri Begawan (BWN).
- **Duration:** Approx. 2.5 hours from KL.
- **Visas:** Most tourists receive **14- or 90-day visa-free entry**. Always check your country’s specific requirements.
🚗 Route 2: Land Journey (Via Sarawak)
This adventure route is only practical if you are already in **East Malaysia (Sarawak or Sabah)**. The journey is complex as Brunei’s two sections are separated by the Malaysian district of Limbang.
Crossing the Enclave: Miri → BSB
The journey requires crossing up to two borders to reach the main capital area:
- **Exit Malaysia** at the **Sungai Tujuh Checkpoint** (near Miri).
- **Enter Brunei** via the **Temburong District** Checkpoint.
- Drive across the **Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge** (Temburong Bridge) directly to Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), bypassing Malaysian territory.
**Note:** This new bridge (30km) makes the journey significantly faster and simpler than the old ferry/Limbang route.
⚠️ Essential Advice for Driving in Brunei
- **Fuel Restriction:** Brunei fuel is subsidized and highly restricted for foreign vehicles. **Fill your tank completely in Malaysia** before crossing.
- **VEP:** If driving a Malaysian-registered car, you must have a valid **Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP)**.
- **Local Transport:** Long-distance buses from Miri are the easiest option for non-drivers, as the operator manages the checkpoint stops.
🚢 Route 3: Ferry from Sabah
Via Labuan Island
This route is best if you are coming from Kota Kinabalu or other parts of Sabah.
- **Starting Point:** Take a ferry from Menumbok (Sabah) to Labuan (Malaysia Federal Territory).
- **Route:** Labuan (Malaysia) → Muara Port (Brunei).
- **Ferry Duration:** Approximately 1.5 – 2 hours.
- **Arrival:** Muara Port is about a 30-minute drive to the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.
