Route Guide
Malaysia (MY) to Singapore (SG)
The Causeway & Second Link: Navigate the world’s busiest land border with *zero* complications.
Step 0: Critical Pre-Departure Prep
Mandatory: Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC)
All foreign visitors (except those specifically exempted, e.g., residents) **must** submit the digital **Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC)** online within **3 days** before arrival. Failure to do so will delay you significantly at the Singapore checkpoints.
**Check Passport Validity:** Ensure your passport has at least **6 months** validity remaining.
**Know Your Stay Limit:** Confirm the number of days you are permitted to stay in Singapore based on your nationality.
Choosing Your Transport Route
1. Public Bus (The Budget Option)
Frequent, cheap, but highly dependent on traffic. You must exit the bus at the JB checkpoint, clear Malaysian immigration, re-board the bus (or another one from the same company), and then alight again at the Singapore checkpoint (Woodlands or Tuas) to clear customs.
**Route:** Use the **Causeway (Woodlands)** for access to central Singapore, or the **Second Link (Tuas)** if heading to the west/airport.
2. KTM Shuttle Tebrau (The Fastest Option)
The fastest, most reliable way to cross. A 5-minute train ride from JB Sentral to Woodlands Checkpoint. Immigration for both countries is done swiftly at the **JB Sentral** station before boarding. Tickets must be booked online well in advance due to high demand.
**Note:** Booking usually opens 30 days in advance.
3. Private Car / Ride-Share / Taxi
Convenient, but subject to the same traffic congestion as the public buses. Ensure the driver has the correct permits (VEP) if traveling in a Malaysian-registered vehicle to avoid severe delays at the Singapore checkpoint.
The 3-Step Crossing Procedure (Bus/Car)
- 1.
Exit Malaysia (Sultan Iskandar Complex or Tuas)
Alight from your transport. Proceed to the Malaysian Immigration counter. Present your passport for the **Exit Stamp**. Ensure you receive the stamp, as failure to do so can cause issues later.
- 2.
Crossing the Link
Walk across the Causeway or re-board your bus/car for the short drive across the water to the Singapore side (Woodlands or Tuas).
- 3.
Enter Singapore (ICA Clearance)
Alight again at the Singapore checkpoint. Proceed to the ICA counter. Present your passport and have your SGAC confirmation ready. Your fingerprints/biometrics will be taken. If approved, you will receive an **electronic stamp** (no physical stamp) in your passport with the granted period of stay.
CUSTOMS ALERT: Singapore’s Zero-Tolerance Rules
Singapore has some of the world’s strictest laws on importable goods. **Ignorance is not an excuse**, and penalties are severe.
- **Vaporizers/E-Cigarettes:** Absolutely **BANNED**. Do not bring any vapes, e-cigarettes, or related products into Singapore. Confiscation and heavy fines are standard.
- **Chewing Gum:** Absolutely **BANNED** (with minor medical exceptions). Do not bring commercial chewing gum across the border.
- **Tobacco Products:** Strict limits on duty-free. All packets of cigarettes must be taxed. If a cigarette packet has the “SDPC” (Singapore Duty Paid Cigarettes) mark, it is safe. Foreign packs are typically not allowed duty-free.
- **Controlled Drugs:** Singapore has a mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking offenses. Do not carry packages for others.
If in doubt, declare it. You can dispose of prohibited items in designated bins before the customs checkpoints.
Traffic Advisory: Avoiding Long Delays
The Causeway is notoriously congested. Your travel time can vary from 30 minutes (off-peak) to 4+ hours (peak).
- **Avoid Peak Hours:** **Weekdays (JB to SG):** Avoid 5:30 AM to 10:00 AM.
- **Avoid Weekend Peak:** **Sundays:** Avoid the entire afternoon/evening (3:00 PM onwards) as Singaporeans return home.
- **Check Traffic Apps:** Use the **OneMotoring (LTA)** website or Google Maps traffic layer just before heading to the checkpoint.
