Thailand to Laos Route Guide (TH-LA) | Friendship Bridges

Route Guide

Thailand (TH) to Laos (LA)

A breakdown of crossing the Mekong River via the Friendship Bridges and the Northern Slow Boat gateway.

Visa On Arrival (VOA) is Straightforward

Laos is one of the easiest countries in Southeast Asia for land entry. Most nationalities can purchase a **Visa On Arrival** directly at the border crossing.

VOA Requirements (Checkpoints below):

  • **Fee:** $30 – $45 USD (depending on nationality and time of day).
  • **Passport Photo:** One recent passport-sized photo is required.
  • **Currency:** Pay in USD for the best rate; Thai Baht is accepted but at an unfavorable exchange rate.

2. The Three Main Crossing Points

🌉

Crossing 1: Nong Khai, TH to Vientiane, LA (The Easiest)

This is the most popular and easiest crossing, connecting the Thai rail hub of Nong Khai directly to the Lao capital, Vientiane.

  • **Transport:** You must take a shuttle bus across the bridge, as walking is not permitted.
  • **Connectivity:** Excellent bus and train links from Bangkok and across Thailand to Nong Khai.
  • **Onward:** Once in Laos, local buses and taxis run directly into Vientiane city center.
Slow Boat

Crossing 2: Chiang Khong, TH to Huay Xai, LA (The Slow Boat Gateway)

This northern crossing is essential for anyone starting the famous two-day **Slow Boat** journey down the Mekong to Luang Prabang.

  • **Process:** After exiting Thai immigration in Chiang Khong, take a local bus or tuk-tuk to the 4th Friendship Bridge, cross, and get your VOA in Huay Xai.
  • **Slow Boat:** The boat departs from Huay Xai. Arrive early in the morning to purchase your ticket and board.
  • **Overnight:** The Slow Boat stops overnight in the town of Pakbeng.
🧭

Crossing 3: Mukdahan, TH to Savannakhet, LA (Central Route)

A less-busy option, ideal if you are traveling from Central or Northeast Thailand (Isaan) and want to access Central Laos quickly.

  • **Location:** Connects the Thai city of Mukdahan with the Lao city of Savannakhet.
  • **Transport:** Like the first bridge, a dedicated shuttle bus is used to cross the bridge.
  • **Benefit:** Provides a more direct link to destinations like Pakse and the beautiful Four Thousand Islands (Si Phan Don) without going via Vientiane.

3. Essential Border Checklist (Laos VOA)

Ensure you have the cash and documents ready to streamline your VOA application.

Documents Required

✓

**Passport:** Valid for at least six (6) months.

✓

**Passport Photo:** One photo (3x4cm or 4x6cm). Without one, they may charge a small fee ($1-$2) to scan your existing passport photo.

✓

**VOA Form:** Available at the Lao immigration desk. Fill it out before queuing.

Money and Time

✓

**Payment:** $35 USD is a safe amount. Do not try to pay with large denominations (e.g., $100 bills). Bring crisp, clean bills.

✓

**Time Change:** Laos is GMT+7; Thailand is GMT+7. **There is no time change.**

✓

**Border Hours:** Generally 06:00 to 22:00 (6 AM to 10 PM) for the Friendship Bridges, though some smaller crossings close earlier.

4. Onward Travel Tips

Crossing with the Thai-Lao Train

For Vientiane, you can take an international train directly from Bangkok (or overnight sleeper) to Nong Khai. A short train route *does* cross the First Friendship Bridge, but it is slow and often requires a change of train on the Lao side. The combination of bus/shuttle crossing is often faster.

Avoid the “Service Fee”: Some VOA desks may ask for an extra 10-20 Baht/USD as a “stamping fee.” This is technically unofficial, but paying it often saves you time arguing.
