Route Guide
Vietnam (VN) to Laos (LA)
A guide to the mountainous, long-distance bus routes connecting the two countries, focusing on efficiency and preparation for the 20+ hour journeys.
Journey Warning: Sleeper Buses & Duration
Land travel between Vietnam and Laos is characterized by very **long, overnight journeys** (20 to 26 hours) on sleeper buses that navigate winding mountain roads. Bring snacks, water, and warm layers, as the mountains can get cold.
Key Logistics:
- **Bus Comfort:** Seats are typically narrow bunks. Book the lowest bunk possible for stability and comfort.
- **Roads:** Expect steep inclines and sharp turns. Motion sickness medication is highly recommended.
- **Border Timing:** Buses often stop near the border overnight and cross first thing in the morning.
2. Major Crossings and Destinations
Central Route: Lao Bảo (VN) to Dansavanh (LA)
This is the most common crossing, linking **Hue/Da Nang (Vietnam)** to **Savannakhet/Vientiane (Laos)**.
- **Origin/Destination:** Popular routes are Da Nang to Savannakhet, or Hue to Vientiane.
- **Duration:** Hue to Vientiane is typically 22–24 hours, often split over two days or one long overnight haul.
- **Customs:** The border post is fairly efficient, handling a mix of commercial and passenger traffic.
Northern Route: Na Meo (VN) to Namsoi (LA)
This route is used by travelers coming from **Hanoi (Vietnam)** and heading toward the popular tourist destinations of **Luang Prabang or Sam Neua (Laos)**.
- **Origin/Destination:** Hanoi to Luang Prabang is the flagship route, often advertised as 24+ hours.
- **Challenge:** This area is very remote and mountainous; the roads are rougher and delays are more likely.
- **Alternative:** Many people prefer to fly from Hanoi to Vientiane or Luang Prabang to save substantial time and discomfort.
3. Essential Border Checklist (Laos VOA)
Ensure you have the required documents and currency for the Lao border.
Documents Required
**Passport:** Valid for at least six (6) months.
**Laos VOA:** Available at major land crossings for most nationalities.
**Passport Photo:** One recent photo (3x4cm or 4x6cm) is required for the VOA application.
Money and Fees
**Payment:** $30 – $45 USD is required for the VOA fee. USD is the standard currency for payment.
**Vietnam Exit Fee:** Sometimes an unofficial VND or USD fee is charged for exiting Vietnam (small amount, roughly $1-$2).
**Border Hours:** Typically 07:00 to 17:00 (7 AM to 5 PM) for land crossings.
4. Arrival in Laos
After the Border Crossing
Your sleeper bus will typically continue directly to its final destination (e.g., Vientiane or Luang Prabang). Once you arrive, Laos is much slower-paced and calmer than Vietnam. You may need to take a tuk-tuk from the bus station into the city center.
Currency: Laos uses the Lao Kip (LAK). While Thai Baht and USD are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, exchanging currency into Kip is best for day-to-day spending.
