Exploring Kundasang: The New Zealand of Sabah

A Journey to Kundasang

When you think of breathtaking landscapes, New Zealand often comes to mind. But did you know that Malaysia has its own slice of paradise that resembles the stunning scenery of New Zealand?

Welcome to Kundasang, located in the state of Sabah. With its cool climate, beautiful mountains, and lush green surroundings, Kundasang is often referred to as the “New Zealand of Sabah.” In this travel guide, I will take you through a journey exploring the unique attractions and experiences that Kundasang has to offer.

The Drive to Kundasang

The journey to Kundasang from Kota Kinabalu takes about two hours. As we set off, the anticipation builds. The roads wind through beautiful landscapes, and the cooling weather is a welcome change from the heat of the city. This area is known for its stunning views and serene atmosphere, making it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

First Stop: Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

Our adventure begins at the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, a must-visit attraction on the way to Kundasang. This high suspension bridge offers a thrilling experience as you walk across it, swaying gently with each step. Built in 2015, it replaced an older bridge constructed in 1930. Local legends say that the original bridge was deemed offensive to a deity, leading to its reconstruction. The bridge is not only functional but also provides a great view of the surrounding area.

Desa Dairy Farm: A Taste of New Zealand

After the bridge, we finally arrive at our first major destination: the Desa Dairy Farm. This picturesque farm is often touted as the “New Zealand of Sabah” due to its stunning backdrop of Mount Kinabalu. The entrance fee is RM5 for adults and RM4 for children aged 7 to 12, while children under 7 can enter for free. The crisp air and scenic views make it a delightful spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The farm also offers delicious ice cream and yogurt made from fresh milk, which we couldn’t resist trying!

Shopping in Kundasang Town

After enjoying the dairy farm, we headed to Kundasang town center, which is bustling with colorful stalls and local vendors. The vibrant atmosphere is reminiscent of a night market, offering a variety of fresh produce and local delicacies. Unfortunately, we arrived a bit late, and many of the stalls were closing. However, the beauty of the area made up for it, and we enjoyed browsing what was left.

Lunch at SS Chinese Restaurant

Feeling hungry, we decided to stop for lunch at SS Chinese Restaurant, the only place in the area serving Chinese cuisine. The food was average, and while it filled our stomachs, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. The seaweed dish had a strong ocean taste and a texture similar to jellyfish, which was not quite to my liking.

Hiking at Sosodikon Hill

Next on our itinerary was Sosodikon Hill, a beautiful spot that requires a bit of a climb. The entrance fee is RM5 for Malaysian citizens and RM10 for foreigners. The climb is steep but well worth it, as the panoramic views from the top are breathtaking. Standing at 1465 meters above sea level, you can see the town below and the rolling hills in the distance.

Wild Boar Tasting Experience

After our hike, we treated ourselves to a unique culinary experience: wild boar meat. Grilled to perfection, it has a distinct flavor, reminiscent of pork but richer in taste. The meat is served with a chili sauce that enhances its flavor. It’s a must-try for adventurous foodies visiting the area!

Nights at Gaya Street Night Market

As our day in Kundasang came to an end, we headed back to Kota Kinabalu for the Gaya Street Night Market, a must-do activity in Kota Kinabalu. Open every Friday and Saturday from 6 PM to midnight, this vibrant market is filled with food stalls, local crafts, and even cosplayers. The atmosphere is lively, and we indulged in various delightful snacks, including grilled octopus and fried banana pancakes, all while soaking in the vibrant street life.
