Inle Lake is a stunning gem in Myanmar, filled with unique experiences and breathtaking scenery. In this blog post, we will take you through an adventure that includes biking, boat rides, and local cuisine, while also giving you a taste of the vibrant culture that surrounds this beautiful area.
Getting Started: The Journey Begins
After a challenging start to our trip with food poisoning, we were eager to explore Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most beautiful destinations. We decided to take advantage of the free bikes offered by our hotel and set out to bike down one side of the lake, take a boat across, and then bike back up. The weather was perfect, and our excitement was palpable.

The Scenic Bike Ride
As we pedaled out of Yungshiu and into the countryside, the beauty of the landscape unfolded before us. We passed fields of crops, rolling hills, and stunning pagodas. The road was mostly smooth, but we did encounter some off-roading, which added to the adventure.
However, we faced challenges too. The air quality was poor due to a lack of proper waste management services, and the smoke from burning trash was noticeable. Despite these obstacles, we were determined to enjoy our ride and soak in the scenery.

Setting Sail on Inle Lake
After an exhilarating bike ride, we reached the edge of the lake and were ready to hop on a boat. The moment we set out onto the open waters, the beauty of Inle Lake took our breath away. The endless horizons, with mountains framing the views, created a picturesque landscape that was hard to forget.

The lake was surprisingly shallow, with an average depth of only about five feet. This clarity allowed us to see the bottom as we glided across the water. We observed local fishermen using unique rowing techniques, propelling their boats with one foot while standing. It was a sight to behold!

A Quick Stop at the Vineyard
While biking back, we stumbled upon a vineyard and decided to take a detour. After biking for several hours, we felt we had earned a break. We entered the vineyard, where we found a beautiful lunch area. Although we opted out of wine tasting due to our recovery from food poisoning, the setting was serene, and we enjoyed a delightful meal.

The Indonesian and Malaysian food we ordered was a bit spicy but delicious. The vineyard also had a water station for refilling our bottles, which was a thoughtful touch given our parched state.
Returning to the Hotel
After a long day of biking and exploring, we returned to our hotel. However, we faced a common issue in the area: power outages. Luckily, the power came back on just in time for us to enjoy dinner without having to rely on the light from our phones.
Reflecting on our day, we realized that exploring Inle Lake on our own was a fantastic way to experience the area. We covered a total of 18 miles, which was quite an achievement, especially in the heat. While we loved the countryside, we also noted the environmental challenges, such as the burning of fields and trash, which impacted the air quality.
Looking Ahead: The Slow Train Adventure
As we wrapped up our day, we were excited about the next leg of our journey—a slow train ride to Kalaw. Known for its scenic views, we anticipated a leisurely trip, even though we had no idea how much it would cost or when it would leave. We were ready for whatever came next, embracing the spontaneity of travel.
