The Ultimate 3-Day Itinerary for Phuket

Planning a trip to Phuket but don’t know where to start? Most travel advice about the island leads you to the same overcrowded tourist hotspots, causing you to miss out on what makes the island truly special.

Luckily, after spending months on the island, I’ve combined all the best things to do into a 3-day trip. This guide will cover the best boat trips, cultural landmarks, nightlife, and street food spots.

This is the only Phuket itinerary you’ll ever need, as it can easily be spread out over a week or more.

Day 1: Island Hopping Adventures

One of the coolest things to do in Thailand is hopping on a boat to explore secluded islands. Phuket is home to some of the best boat trips in the country. The mistake most people make is trying to visit the famous Phi Phi Islands as a day trip. While they are definitely worth visiting, the long travel times in a noisy speedboat leave you with less time to explore.

Luckily, there are plenty of closer options that provide a fantastic experience with shorter travel times. For families with young kids or those who get seasick easily, consider a half-day trip to beautiful tropical islands.

Depending on your budget, you can enjoy a group tour on a speedboat or rent a private yacht. The first stop will take you to one of the best snorkeling spots in Thailand, where you can swim with clownfish, parrot fish, and other marine life. Next, you’ll visit Racha Island, known for its crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches.

Another fascinating stop is Coral Island, where you can relax at a small bar and restaurant. This island is inhabited by great hornbill birds, stunning creatures native to Southeast Asia.

For a unique experience, consider the James Bond Island tour, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden caves. This area is home to Ko Panyi, a fishing village built on stilts, famously known as the “sea gypsies” of Thailand. The village is famous for its seafood restaurants and even has a floating football pitch created by local children.

Your tour might also take you through winding rivers and mangrove forests, which are home to monkeys, birds, and fish. Many islands in the bay have sea caves accessible by kayak, where you can explore hidden lagoons.

After a full day of exploring, it’s time to unwind. Phuket is home to one of the wildest nightlife spots in Thailand, a mix of bars, red-light districts, and lively entertainment. The main strip near Patong Beach is filled with bars and nightclubs, while the seedier parts offer go-go bars and ping pong shows. This is Bangla Road, where you can experience Thailand at its wildest.

Day 2: Cultural Exploration and Street Food

On your second day, visit some of the island’s most important cultural landmarks. Start your day early with a climb to the highest point of the island, where you’ll find Phuket’s iconic Big Buddha. The hike from Kata Beach takes about an hour to an hour and a half. At the top, you’ll be greeted by both monks and monkeys, so be sure to bring some bananas!

Big Buddha

After your hike, you’ll likely be hungry. Phuket has an incredible street food scene, and the best place to eat is Old Town. This area is known for its mix of European and Asian architectural styles, with colourful buildings and temples. Here, you can find a high concentration of Michelin-rated street food stands, unbelievable dessert shops, and noodle stalls.

Phuket Old Town

One of the famous spots is Roy Toam, known for its Thai curries and freshly baked bread. You can also indulge in some of the best desserts at various cafes, including chocolate shops and boutique ice cream parlours.

As night falls, explore some classier options for a night out. Old Town features live music bars, cocktail lounges, and whiskey bars, providing a different vibe than Bangla Road. If you’re looking for the best cocktails on the island, venture to Chalong Bay, a French-owned distillery that produces rum, gin, and vodka.

Finally, don’t miss out on the stunning sunset views from cliffside bars and restaurants located near Karon Viewpoint, where you can enjoy delicious food and drinks while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Day 3: Wildlife and Beaches

On your final day, consider visiting an elephant sanctuary. Phuket is known for its questionable animal welfare practices, so it’s essential to choose a reputable sanctuary. Tours typically start with an educational session about the elephants, followed by feeding them bananas and fruits. You’ll even get the chance to bathe the elephants in a pool, which is a fun and interactive experience.

Elephant Sanctuary

Two recommended sanctuaries are the Green Elephant Sanctuary and the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, with half-day tours costing around 2,500 Baht per person.

In the afternoon, escape the crowds by heading to some of the island’s hidden beaches. Paradise Beach is an excellent snorkelling spot with coral reefs, and it’s much smaller and quieter than Patong Beach.

Paradise Beach

If you’re up for an adventure, visit Freedom Beach, one of the only undeveloped beaches on the island. You can reach it by hiking down the beach or taking a long-tail boat. This beach is a favourite among many visitors for its pristine beauty.

As your trip comes to an end, you might want to check out nearby Krabi for more stunning beaches and adventures. This three-day itinerary offers a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and adventure, ensuring you experience the best of Phuket.
